On the closing weekend of Whāia te Taniwha, join artist Ngahuia Harrison to hear about her practice and works.

Discover the evolving relationship between Ngātiwai and tohoraha (whales) and the complexity of kaitiakitanga (guardianship, stewardship) as it is lived, practiced, and continually adapted in place. Ngahuia will discuss her works in Whāia te Taniwha, situating within her wider body of creative-led research.

Working primarily with a 4x5 camera, Ngahuia Harrison creates lens-based work that examines the relationship between mana-i-te-whenua, legislation, labour and land. Often asking what the contemporary and future understandings of kaitiakitanga are under capitalism, and the ways in which mana-i-te-whenua have upheld the role of kaitiaki (guardian, custodian) while putting food on the table.
