Georgia Suiter A Visionary Landscape - the Canterbury Plains
American weaver Georgia Suiter arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1974, after working in the Chicago studio of the famous German weaver Else Regensteiner during the early 1970s. Suiter became a central figure in Aotearoa weaving circles, specialising in floor rugs and wall hangings. Her affection for this country’s landscape was conveyed in her weavings, and in this work she responds to the expansive Kā Pākihi-whakatekateka-a-Waitaha Canterbury Plains. Taking a bird’s eye view, the abstracted patterns of the paddocks, fences and shelter belts seem to have captivated her in much the same way they did for several artists including, in these spaces, Bill Sutton and Colin McCahon.
