Alice Coats had a deep love of nature and steered away from Flight’s exhortations to focus on industrial, automobile or urban subjects. She was a talented printmaker and worked with coloured wood-engravings as well as linocuts. In Two White Horses she has skilfully rubbed the back of the paper with a burin to achieve the delicate shading effects of the grass and the coat of the grey horse. Her interest in the natural world led her to study horticulture and she published several highly regarded books on the subject.
