A new sculpture for Christchurch
Behind the scenes
A karanga competed with the familiar rebuild soundtrack of hammering and excavating on Tuesday morning, as Lonnie Hutchinson's I like your form was launched at The Commons, on the former site of the Crowne Plaza hotel. Looping through the wooden Arcades frames, the 50 metre-long work reimagines a Maori hinaki, or eel trap, on an epic scale.

Up for 6 weeks, which already feels like it might be a bit short, the work is a project organised by FESTA (Festival of Transitional Architecture) and contrasts an impression of diaphanous fragility with a sense of underlying strength. As with many of Hutchinson's works, it honours traditional forms while claiming space in a way that is personal, architectural and entirely contemporary. If you're in Christchurch, it's a welcome something to add to your 'To See' list.
