Gallery update

Gallery update

This is something of a good news / bad news message. Unfortunately it has now become abundantly clear that our much-hoped for reopening in July is not going to happen. Rest assured, the Gallery building is still sound, and will reopen.

It's an open house. Come in. That's the simple message we'll be sending when the Gallery reopens later this year.

SELF-PORTRAITS created by a group of year 3 pupils who had spent the morning of February 22 at the Christchurch Art Gallery have become both a permanent record and a way to heal the emotional impact of their experiences.

From the director

As many of you know, Christchurch Art Gallery has been closed to visitors since 22 February 2011 when an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck New Zealand's second largest city. It's the second major earthquake to strike Christchurch and came just over six months after the first on 4 September 2010.

The next best thing

The next best thing

We had three great exhibitions on display in February. De-Building, Van der Velden: Otira and Leo Bensemann: A Fantastic Art Venture all opened within three weeks of the earthquake, and all three had their runs cut very short.

The Gallery is again almost unrecognisable in places - its every nook and cranny now filled with temporary workstations manned by volunteers in hi vis vests, USAR teams refueling on coffee and Powerade between sorties out into the 'red zone', news crews waiting for briefings from politicians or glimpses of princes.
