The Quietening

Joanna Langford The Quietening

This mixed media work was part of Langford’s solo exhibition The Quietening at the end of her tenure as OSB artist in residence. The exhibition included a site specific construction as well as several works on board. Langford’s use of found materials such as plastic shopping bags, food, photographs and other everyday items, are transformed into magical environments or possibilities. The Quietening makes use of twisted plastic to create an enfolding arrangement or meditation. Like cumulus clouds, descending waterfalls or billowing fabric enlivened by the wind, white plastic is juxtaposed with delicate linear articulations. Langford likes to create a tension between the real and the fantastic.

From the director

As many of you know, Christchurch Art Gallery has been closed to visitors since 22 February 2011 when an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck New Zealand's second largest city. It's the second major earthquake to strike Christchurch and came just over six months after the first on 4 September 2010.

Earthquake Gallery shop footage

Comment is superfluous here really, but we thought we would show what the scene was like in the Gallery shop on the day of the earthquake.
