Max Gimblett Study for Jade

“The World Trade Towers […] were out my window and [are] now in my heart.” —Max Gimblett

Two vertical bars, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City, were a dominant feature in the lower Bowery neighbourhood where Max had his studio for several decades. They towered above the city, and when they were attacked on 11 September 2001 Max watched the destruction from the rooftop of his Bowery studio. In this work, the flat, geometric yellow and red bars of the towers are set against a lively vortex of jade green.

With no beginning and no end, the circle is considered a perfect form in many cultures. Alongside Max’s well-known ensos (rapidly brushed circles) are his more precisely drawn circles within circles, such as we see in this work. The artist would often draw these to provide insight into relationships between colours and diameters. If he was happy with the result, Max would then scale them up into large paintings. Unlike his spontaneously drawn ensos, these circles have been precisely drawn with a compass, carefully painted in and delicately balanced on a clearly defined horizontal line.
