This exhibition, arranged by Dunedin Public Art Gallery, was a survey of Hotere's work from 1963-73. The choice of paintings shown was the artist's.
Twenty-two mostly recent paintings were for sale and the remaining 41 belonged to private collectors and public art galleries. Five works were owned by Ralph Hotere himself and seventeen by Barry Lett Galleries, Auckland, and Hotere's agent.
Behind the scenes, careless and inexperienced handling of the exhibition resulted in considerable damage to a large proportion of the paintings, involving scuff mark through faulty packing, dirty finger marks, and dents and holes in canvas so it was a decimated exhibition due to works being withdrawn from the catalogue.
