Broadsheet from Dunedin Public Art Gallery concerning Portrait of Mexico (detail)
This exhibition is now closed
This was an outstanding exhibition showcasing Mexico's cultural development over 35 centuries. It covered sculpture, painting, ceramics, pottery, folk art and religious art. Many of the works came from the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City and were on special loan for the duration of the exhibition.
Sculptural pieces were displayed in front of the Gallery and in the Botanic Gardens.
50% of the collection was pre-Columbian art, 15% art of the New Spain period and 20% the modern schools of contemporary folk art and sculpture.
A team of Mexican experts toured with the exhibition who gave lectures and arranged special tour sessions of the collection.
The final attendance of 27,806 achieved a new record for one exhibition in the Gallery.
151 organised school parties visited and the exhibition was considered a great success.
