An exhibiiton of commercial poster art from Poland

Through the courtesy of the Polish and New Zealand National Commissions for UNESCO an exhibition of commercial poster art was brought to New Zealand in exchange for an exhibition of New Zealand graphic art which toured Poland at the same time.

The poster was seen as one of the leading branches of Polish art after World War II and the exhibitoin was notable for its multiplicity of styles.

The 78 posters in this exhibition announced festivals, exhibitions, concerts, industrial safety and films, including many films which were well known here. The posters were mounted on heavy cardboard with two eyelets top and bottom.

In Christchurch the response to this exhibition was not very good and attendance was under 700 despite schools, advertising agencies, printers, commercial artists, and the university having been notified. Unfortunately the exhibition coincided with a big conference of advertising companies and printers in Hanmer Springs.

Admission cost one shilling.
