Allen Maddox No Mail Today 1978. Acrylic on canvas. Collection of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, purchased 2015

Three paintings by Tony Fomison, Philip Clairmont and Allen Maddox.

No! That’s wrong XXXXXX brings together three paintings by Tony Fomison, Philip Clairmont and Allen Maddox, to mark the acquisition of Maddox's No Mail Today. This is the first painting by the artist to enter the Gallery's collection. Fomison, Clairmont and Maddox were firm friends for much of their working lives and called themselves the Militant Artists Union whenever they got together. The trio first met in Christchurch in 1968 and all three studied at University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. While they had different styles of painting, they all shared an interest in, and were influenced by, 1960s and 70s counter culture and contemporary rock music by bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Can.
