A selection of the Gallery’s most-treasured historical European artworks.
A selection of the Gallery’s most-treasured historical European artworks.
Marvel at the exquisite brushwork of Gerrit Dou’s The Physician (1653), the quiet sorrow of Petrus van der Velden’s Marken Funeral Barge (c.1873), the unrepentant celebration of the industrial in L.S. Lowry’s Factory at Widnes (1956) or the astonishingly simplified clarity and beauty of Frances Hodgkins’s Still Life (1932). New Dawn Fades presents a broad selection of some of Christchurch Art Gallery’s most-treasured European artworks from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. Many of these works formed the foundation collection when the Gallery first opened in 1932 and have continued to be enjoyed by generations of visitors over the years.
