English Artist Potters

June 1965

This British Council Permanent Travelling Exhibition showed the work of six leading artist-potters form 1913-1960, including Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, William Statite Murray, Thomas Samuel Haile, Lucie Rie and Hans Cooper.

53 photographs formed the major part of the exhibition and the 17 examples of pottery were included to supplement them. The photographs (with the exception of the colour plates) were printed so that the pots appeared at approximately their actual size.

Practising potters who visited the exhibition were allowed to handle the exhibits under proper supervision.

The following books were also included with the exhibition: Chinese Ceramic glazes by A. L. Hetherington, English Slipware by Dorothy Kemp and Style in Pottery by Arthur lane. The periodicals, Potter Quarterly and The Craftsmen Potters Association Newsletter were also available.

On Sunday 6 June, David Brokenshire, President of the Canterbury Potters' Association gave a talk on The Roots of Modern Studio Pottery.
