This large exhibition, in two parts, was assembled by Auckland Art Gallery from public collections in New Zealand and the National Library of Autralia in Canberra.
Important artists from 1830 to 1880 were well represented, including Nicholas Chevalier, Augustus Earle, Sir William Fox, John Gully, Charles Heaphy, Major Gustuvus Ferdinand von Tempsky.
The works were mainly picturesque landscapes painted in the European tradition.
A catalogue and an illustrated supplement of 59 colour reproductions were produced.
Private photography was allowed.
