Contemporary American Prints exhibition catalogue cover (detail)
This exhibition which toured New Zealand, comprised 61 original signed works representing most of the contemporary trends in graphic arts in the USA. According to one Press reviewer the works were striking in colour.
Artists included Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine and Claes Oldenburg.
The exhibition was visited by 4,659 people.
The then Director of the Robert McDougall Art GAllery, Brian Muir, and the Mayor of Christchurch, Neville Pickering wanted to cancel the public opening of the exhibition as they were faced with the possibility of a protest after Nixon renewed the bombing in Vietnam. They felt it placed the Gallery in an awkward situation but as the invitations had already been sent out, the opening was held.
