In the exhibition Canterbury Confrontations arranged by Art Gallery Director, Brian Muir, artists were invited to contribute a single work in any media of a portrait of another artist. 34 artists were invited, 22 accepted and 3 declined and there was no reply from 9.
A list of names was put forward and then names were democratically chosen from a hat and the participants informed of their 'confrontation'. Pairings included Philip Clairmont/Doris Lusk, John Coley/Leo Bensemann and Alan Prearson/Carl Sydow.
