British Council's Contemporary British Drawings

25 September –
13 October 1953

Star-Sun, 1 October 1953

A collection of drawings from the British Council, featuring work by Edward Burra, Barbara Hepworth, Frances Hodgkins, Gwen John, Henry Moore, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Eduardo Paolozzi, Stanley Spencer and Walter Sickert. Gallery curator William Baverstock reported that this was a "difficult" show. He went on: "It is wasting time to say that this is not a popular exhibition. The enthusiasts for it are a minority in the community and the British Council must know this."

The exhibition clashed with the Christcuhrch Air Race which was given as a reason for low attendance.
