Archive Lounge: The Art of the Map
30 April –
14 August 2026
Eileen Mayo 'Australia', The Story of the World, Universal Textbooks, 1938.
A book without a map is like toast without butter. Explore the magic that maps bring to books.
Maps add magic to books in all kinds of ways. Some provide information that cannot be organized in any other way. Some are purely decorative. But the best do both: telling the reader something extra, imaginatively and beautifully. Enjoy this selection of books from the Robert and Barbara Stewart Library and Archive in which a map has added its own special cartographic sparkle.
Many of the maps displayed on the screen in this show can also be seen online.
