Oliver Stead, curator of drawings, paintings and prints at the Alexander Turnbull Library, presents an entertaining view of the life and exploits of Sir Rex Nan Kivell.
Born Reginald Nankivell in Christchurch in 1898, and raised in New Brighton, Rex Nan Kivell became one of the most successful art dealers in London, owning and directing the prestigious Redfern Gallery in Mayfair from 1931 to his death in 1977. Over a lifetime of collecting and dealing, Nan Kivell represented many famous artists, owned many famous paintings, and made many spectacular gifts to libraries, museums and galleries around the world, including Christchurch Art Gallery. Oliver’s talk will focus on Nan Kivell’s heritage and legacy in Christchurch.
