Sculptor and printmaker, Sam Harrison was the 2005 winner of the Friends CPIT Scholarship and has been practising full-time since graduating from CPIT with a bachelor's in art and design in 2006. Widely considered an exceptional young talent, Sam already has several successful solo shows behind him, most recently at CoCA (2007, 2008), at Solander, Wellington (2009), and is currently working towards group exhibitions at the Jensen Gallery, Auckland and the Brooke Gifford, Christchurch culminating in a solo exhibition at Jensen in December of this year.
Sam sculpts bold concrete busts and prints striking portraits from meticulously crafted and intricately detailed wood cuts, often large scale, which evidence a real empathy for and engagement with his models. Sam's work is classic in that he explores biblical narratives and Renaissance ideals of beauty and form, and contemporary in the often 'unpretty', dramatic, chiaroscurist modelling of his figures. His works now feature in private and public collections throughout New Zealand.
Friends only. Maximum 15 members. Please meet outside ChristChurch Cathedral at 10.20am
