The Embassy of Japan in New Zealand presents this screening as part of the Japanese Film Festival’s fascinating 2020 season. 

Set in Fukuoka City during the 1950s, Toshiyuki and his wife Chiyoko run a small grocery store in the Nakasu district. Toshiyuki is enthusiastic about making mentaiko (fish roe usually served salted and spiced with red pepper). One day, he hears from his son Kenichi about a classmate, Eiko. She is in a pitiful situation, living with a relative since her parents died.
