The Embassy of Japan in New Zealand presents this screening as part of the Japanese Film Festival’s fascinating 2020 season. A heartwarming family story.
Single mother Kaoru and her daughter Futaba live on Hachijojima, an island resplendent with nature. When Futaba starts high school she enters a rebellious phase and gives her mother the silent treatment despite her attempts to communicate. Kaoru strikes back by making chara-ben lunches with food shaped like characters, which really annoys Futaba.
Director: Rempei Tsukamoto, 2019, 106 minutes, classification TBC. Cast: Ryoko Shinohara, Kyoko Yoshine.
