The fourth film in the Christchurch iteration of the Eighteenth Latin America and Spain Film Festival, Broken Panties is a Chilean dramatic comedy about five women living in a large hacienda in rural Chile: matriarch Matilde and her daughters – three biological and one adopted.
Any resemblance to Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, however, ends there. On her deathbed, Matilde confesses to the village priest that she killed her husband forty years ago, and buried him inside a chest in the garage – a chest that also contained another body. The news shocks the entire household and secrets long buried are made public in this dark comedy. (2018, 101 mins.)
