Artists' Talk: Sione Tuívailala Monū and Edith Amituanai

Artists' Talk: Sione Tuívailala Monū and Edith Amituanai

Talk

Saturday 8 June, 2pm

Philip Carter Family Auditorium

Free

Join artist and educator John Vea (Aotearoa, Tonga) in conversation with Tāmaki Makaurau-based artists Sione Tuívailala Monū (Aotearoa, Australia, Tonga) and Edith Amituanai (Aotearoa, Samoa) to learn more about their exhibition, Toloa Tales.

In 2023, Edith and Sione travelled to Samoa to celebrate a friend’s participation in the Miss Samoa Fa’afafine Pageant and visit Edith’s family. Sione was interested in exploring historical and familial connections between Tonga and Samoa, and both were thinking about what it means to return to an ancestral homeland, for themselves and others.

Following the artist talk, stick around for a drop-in headdress making workshop lead by Sione Tuívailala Monū. Wear your creations along to the annual Drag Night on the 12 June.
