Olivia Spencer Bower stayed with writer, artist, broadcaster and art critic Eric Newton (1893-1965) and his wife the theatrical designer Stella Newton née Pearce (1901-2001) while visiting London in 1965. The Newton’s lived at 3 Cumberland Gardens, part of the Lloyd Baker estate, about halfway between Kings Cross Station and Sadler’s Wells Theatre. The large gabled building is Bethany House, formerly the home of the Society of the Sisters of Bethany, now accommodation for women, run by Sapphire Independent Housing.
