The Canterbury painter Sydney Lough Thompson divided his time between New Zealand and France throughout his long career. He moved readily between pleinair painting and working in the studio, but while in France in 1911 he adopted a new style that embraced painting outdoors. Heavily influenced by his exposure to works by the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, he adopted a brighter palette of colours and became interested in capturing movement in the landscape.
