Caroline Yonge’s linocuts focused on living animals and her subjects included leopards, polar bears, toucans, wapiti and this rather timid looking serval. Yonge makes use of just three blocks in different shades of brown to depict the African cat’s beautiful spotted coat and the grasses in the background. She would likely have studied animals such as this at the London Zoo, which was easily accessible when she was a student at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Like several other linocut artists in this exhibition there is very little information on Yonge, shipping records show that she travelled widely during the 1930s including a trip to Australia and the rare examples of her linocuts included in Nan Kivell’s gift show an artist of considerable skill.
