Throughout the twentieth century, London was a magnet for young art students from all over the world looking to study at the city’s prestigious art schools. Anne Henderson arrived from Trinidad and Tobago as a wide-eyed 17-year-old, and is thought to have studied at the Royal College of Art and the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. The Grosvenor’s approach was pay-as-you-go so artists could attend for just a few weeks if they wished. Henderson’s linocut The Deck could very likely be a view of the deck of the HMS Cavina, a boat she sailed on numerous times as she returned to Trinidad to visit her family.
