Artists Enid Martin and Ronald Grierson married in 1930 and worked together closely. Grierson studied at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art around 1929. Grierson’s work was included in the First Exhibition of British Lino-Cuts at the Redfern Gallery in 1929. It is assumed Martin attended the Grosvenor as well and they both exhibited linocuts in Modern Colour Prints at the Redfern Gallery in 1932. The pair became interested in carpet design and taught themselves to weave – Grierson became highly regarded as a textile designer and held an exhibition of his hand-tufted rugs at the Redfern Gallery in 1936. Both artists’ strong interest in design comes through in their linocuts which were influenced by cubism and surrealism and focused heavily on the still life as their subject.
