The setting of John Madden’s atmospheric painting is not yet identified with certainty but resembles Lake Manapouri in Te Rua-o-te-moko Fiordland, which he is known to have painted. It is also similar to Tamatea Dusky Sound, which Madden visited regularly from 1884. Artists aboard the annual summer Te Tai Poutini West Coast Sounds tourist cruise were typically dropped off at selected sites with their tents and necessary supplies, to be collected after a week or so of intensive sketching. They would work up their paintings later, in the comfort of their own studios.
