Bensemann was captivated by the hills of the Pikikirunga Range, which runs inland longside East Tākaka, Motupipi, Clifton, Pohara, Ligar Bay and Tata Beach. This painting was finished back in his Ōtautahi Christchurch studio from photographs taken in the area. He appears just as interested in the underlying structure and shape of the landforms as he is in what is present above them; apart from the foreground all plant life has been stripped back to a simple shades of green and he also avoids any sign of human habitation.
