Highly regarded senior British artist Bernard Cohen completed this small gouache as part of a series of untitled drawings in 1975. The series explored the repeated use of freely floating ovals, rectangles and squares – all of which are present in this work. The various white shapes sit within black rectangles and allow us to see through to the white ground beneath. Like Peter Robinson’s sculpture 'Diecuts and Derivations', Cohen’s abstract shapes have a die-cut quality that puts as much emphasis on what’s missing or cut-away as on what remains.
