The profile image of the female head was used by Picasso in printmaking as early as 1905 and became a theme he returned to regularly. Picasso made this lithograph of his wife, Jacqueline, in 1956, the year after they were married. Jacqueline Roque met Picasso in 1952 while she was working for her cousin who ran the Valhallaus Gallery in Paris. She was one of Picasso’s favoured models from this period. Picasso, who was born in Spain but lived much of his adult life in France, was arguably the most innovative and influential artist of the 20th century. He worked in almost every artistic medium but his major innovation, with friend and fellow artist Georges Braque (1882-1963), was Cubism. Picasso’s work appeared in the first exhibition of Surrealist painting in Paris in 1925. He continued to produce art up to the time of his death.
