Quadrant: Four themes of Petrus van der Velden, 20 October 2006 – 25 March 2007
In this portrait, Van der Velden has portrayed the features of the sitter in a delicate manner. Using charcoal, he has created a soft, hazy, atmospheric study of a Dutch boy, whose facial features can only just be made out. The cap, eyes and nose are faintly depicted with carefully drawn shading, while the mouth and jaw are suggested rather than represented. This work is an excellent example of the subtle shifts in tone that Van der Velden was able to achieve with charcoal.
