In 1894 the group began renting Pumpkin Cottage in the rural surroundings of Silverstream in the Hutt Valley, where artists would spend extended visits painting outdoors. Sunlit Estuary depicts the Paremata estuary north of Wellington, which was also a favourite painting area for Nairn and members of the Wellington Art Club.
