The son of artist John Gibb, William Menzies Gibb visited the United Kingdom in 1910, so it is possible this painting was prepared or produced around that visit. Here Gibb explores the more sensitive atmospheres light can generate; the last peek of daylight highlights lavenders and greens in a haze of opaque blues before they disappear completely into night. A chilly walk home looks inevitable.
