Bronwynne Cornish’s distinctive ceramic owl jugs first appeared in her 2003 exhibition Lost Birds. This work, from her later Laughing Owl series, elevates the extinct whēkau on a truncated tree trunk—a rustcoloured stump—granting the ancient, wise bird a diminished lookout position. The whēkau’s strange, unworldly laugh is no longer heard
