This spare and vulnerable drawing of Kristin Stephenson’s husband, Steve, was made as vascular dementia gradually undermined the clear outlines of his personality. He had always loved being drawn by her, and they had agreed that she would record the progression of his condition, however difficult. Here, unflinching lines document his increasingly fluid sense of self and her experience of a familiar body made newly strange. Flung into an untested reality, Kristin and Steve connected through the ordinary. His woolly socks speak to the small comforts they arrived at together to ease the journey.
