These early geometric works on paper, or geos as Max calls them, highlight the artist’s search for combinations of colour and form. If he was happy with the outcome, he would scale the geo up into a painting – such as Orange / Blue, which you can see to your right. The bars appear either on their own or in pairs, varying in thickness. For the double bars, Max explored different locations on the background field of colour; close together or separated in differing degrees from the edge of the composition.
