Kazu Nakagawa’s sculptures express the Japanese concept of ‘ma’ – the space between objects, or the room around things. Here, an elegant arrangement with a place set mysteriously for one calls our attention to what – or, perhaps more importantly, who – might be missing. The unexpected scale – too insubstantial for usual use, yet also not toy-like – and the care and precision with which the artist has made these objects, adds an atmosphere of expectation to an otherwise ordinary domestic scene.
