As a printmaker Albert Rae favoured etching which he was taught when furthering his art studies in England during the 1910s. He settled in Timaru in 1922 and was one of the few New Zealand artists to specialise in mezzotint, a difficult medium to master which he used to good effect in his moody, romantic views of Kā Tiriti-o-te-moana / the Southern Alps.
