Christchurch artist Bill Sutton enjoyed travelling to the countryside to paint outdoors. In a letter written in 1987 he commented that ‘I hope to get overto Pigeon Bay … Perhaps the hills have dried off and bleached out a bit. Splendid sketching country all over the Peninsula.’ He also explained the particular difficulties faced when painting plein-air with watercolours, ‘On hot days paint dries too quickly … on cold days the paint refuses to dry … when it is humid the paint fuses and blurs.’
