Stuck in enemy territory
Behind the scenes
One hundred years ago today, The Press carried this amazing story of Mina Arndt and her sister becoming stuck in Germany.
The story - which can be read in full on the ever wonderful PapersPast - describes their alarm at being stuck in Berlin when war was declared, being declared enemy aliens and finally taking a train, under the protection of the American Embassy, to 'friendly territory'.
She has a couple of works in our collection, including this arresting charcoal drawing.
