How close is too close?
Behind the scenes
We've been trying out some zoomable high resolution images which allow you to see amazing details in works from our collection.
This engraving for example, which when viewed regular size gives little away. View it super large and a straightforward romantic landscape comes alive with details including a dozen or so small animals.
James Elkins wrote a wonderful article about zooming in to impossible levels of detail when GoogleArt was launched. He described it as 'a zoo of oddities' and found this dot by dot image of a head a particularly unacceptable way of getting to grips with Seurat.
See the three works that have so far received this close-up treatment - there are more to follow but they will all be done with discretion and not in the extreme GoogleArt manner.
