Behind the scenes
You may have seen the story of the Caravaggio and the chap who is sueing Sotheby's
Lancelot Thwaytes of Penrith sold the painting in 1996 for £42,000 through Sotheby's as being a work by a follower of Caravaggio. Its new owner, Sir Denis Mahon, has decided that it is by the master himself and is therefore worth £11 million - well he would, wouldn't he?
Mr Thwaytes is of course a bit cross about this turn of events and is suing Sotheby's for failing to research the work properly.
Either way it is a contemporary copy as the real painting of 'The cardsharps' is at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth.
We ourselves have an attractive engraving of this famous painting
And you can see the real thing here.
