Manet
Behind the scenes
On this day in 1832 Édouard Manet was born.
Here he is, in an etching by Degas, dated 1864, when he would have been about 32.
This drawing was added to our collection in 1974. The director at the time, Brian Muir, was keen to take the collection in a very new direction, wanting it to contain examples of art from all periods and styles, so that it could serve as an educational tool to explain the development of Western art.
Jonathan Mané-Wheoki was studying in London at the time and acted as Muir's eyes and ears, purchasing works from various dealers and exhibitions: everything from Ancient Egypt to Andy Warhol.
This item was purchased from Craddock and Barnard. Here is the telegram from London, seeking permission to spend the entire budget on this one work.
