40 Years of Leo Bensemann

Behind the scenes

A wonderful collection of paintings by Leo Bensemann opened in Christchurch last night at W.T. MacAlister Gallery.

Peter Simpson, one of the curators of Leo's retrospective exhibition Leo Bensemann: A Fantastic Art Venture, spoke eloquently and provided some wonderful insights and anecdotes to many of the works on display. Hearing Peter speak and viewing Leo's works last night reminded me of the times I did manage to visit Leo Bensemann: A Fantastic Art Venture here at the Christchurch Art Gallery before it was closed due to the February 2011 earthquake. That exhibition was open for just 12 days and I was fortunate enough to visit it on a regular basis, at least once a day, while it was open. The collection of Leo's work at W.T.MacAlister Gallery contains some excellent examples by the artist and is well worth the visit.
