Lessons on wheels

Behind the scenes

This term I am in the car taking lessons out and about to schools around Christchurch as part of our outreach programme.

So far, I have visited Somerfield school, Merrin school, St Andrews College and Springfield school, and I am now booked out for the rest of the term. I have been teaching two lessons: Pacific Printmaking and Heitiki, both of which are based on works in the Gallery's collection and forge links to exhibitions that are due to open later in the year. For each lesson all materials, resources and equipment are supplied by the Gallery.

I am really enjoying getting to know teachers and school communities better. Working at the schools has allowed me to see what art is being taught in classes around Christchurch and I am always impressed by how well primary school teachers can take an artist's body of work and turn it into understandable and achievable learning experiences. I am soaking up lots of ideas and being very inspired by what I see up on classroom walls – as usual I am learning just as much as the people I teach. I am also getting pretty good at packing and unpacking the car.

A good job! Some of the children at Somerfield were in their first week at school.
