Painting from the Pacific

This exhibition is now closed

Paintings from four Pacific regions – Japan, Australia, America and New Zealand -were arranged by Auckland Art Gallery for the Auckland Festival with the co-operation of the Directors of the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Queensland Art Gallery.

The aim of the exhibition was to bring all four regions together to see whether the Pacific provided any common characteristics, such as light or topography, and to show the vitality of contemporary painting across the region.

New Zealand artists shown were Colin McCahon, John Holmwood, Jean Horsley, Alwyn Lasenby, Milan Mrkusich, Keith Patterson, Don Peebles, Freda Simmonds, John Pine Snadden and Toss Wollaston.

1590 visitors attended the exhibition at one shilling each and 60 people attended the informal tour and discussion led by Professor John Simpson, from Canterbury University's School of Fine Art.

A talk by Gallery Director W S Baverstock was recorded for 3ZB with radio personality Molly McNab.
