This important exhibition was organized by the New Zealand National Art Gallery through the Japanese Embassy.
It comprised a full range of contemporary Japanese fine arts including 68 paintings, woodcuts, pots, lacquerware, bamboo crafts, dolls, metalcraft, porcelain and textiles. Notable among the exhibitors was Shoji Hamada.
Some of the exhibits were so large that they had to be displayed on the floor behind rope barriers.
Films also accompanied the exhibition but the Gallery had no facilities to show them and they were shown at the Canterbury Public Library, the Canterbury Museum and the University of Canterbury instead. A public talk was given by Gordon McArthur on The Background to Japanese Art. McArthur and his wife, Crystabel Aitken, were collectors of oriental art.
The exhibition was considered a great success and was well-received by 2408 visitors.
